IRCC’s new fee structure targeted specific application types, including:

  • Restoration of Temporary Resident Status: For visitors, workers, and students who had to reinstate their legal status in Canada.
  • Authorization to Return to Canada: Required for individuals previously ordered to leave Canada.
  • Criminal Rehabilitation Applications: For those inadmissible to Canada due to past criminal convictions, including cases of serious criminality.
  • Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) Applications: Authorities issue these permits to individuals who are otherwise inadmissible but require temporary access to Canada.

Although the authorities have yet to disclose the exact updated fees, they advise applicants to prepare for these adjustments, especially when submitting paper applications.

What If You Had Paid the Old Fees?

Applicants who submitted online applications did not need to worry about discrepancies because the system processed their submissions instantly. For mailed applications, a delay may have occurred between submission and receipt by IRCC. Generally, applications with the old fee were not rejected if:

  • The full old fee was paid.
  • The application was complete.
  • The application was mailed before the fee adjustment date.

In cases where individuals needed to make an additional payment, IRCC provided instructions to help them calculate and pay the difference.

How to Pay Fee Adjustments

When an applicant submits a paper application and has already paid the previous fee before a fee change occurred, they may need to pay the difference. Additionally, they will receive instructions on how to submit their payment receipt after making the additional payment.

How to obtain a receipt

  • Calculate the Fee Difference: The applicant must calculate the difference between the old fee and the new fee, including any changes applicable to family members.
  • Make the Payment: The applicant should select the “Make an additional payment or pay other fees” category in the IRCC’s online payment tool.
    • In the “Quantity” field, the applicant should enter the total fee difference (new fee minus old fee).
    • We will issue a receipt for each payment you make. You can complete your payments in a single transaction or submit them multiple times to receive separate receipts.
    • To finalize the payment, the applicant must either create an IRCC account or sign in to an existing account.
  • Submit the Receipt: The applicant must adhere to the instructions in the initial fee request from IRCC regarding the submission of their receipt.

This streamlined process ensured that applications remained valid even after fee updates.
