New US visa requirements announced for Nigerian applicants in a statement issued on Friday, the US mission disclosed that the new requirement will take effect on Tuesday, 22 April 2025.
The United States Embassy has announced updated visa interview requirements for applicants from Nigeria.
The directive stipulates that individuals attending visa interviews in Abuja and Lagos must now present a DS-160 application form that includes a confirmation barcode commencing with “AA00.”
According to the U.S. mission, applicants must present a code that aligns with the one utilized during the online appointment scheduling process.
The mission has indicated that individuals who are unable to provide a matching code will be unable to attend their visa interviews.

On Friday, the U.S. mission announced that the new requirement will be effective starting Tuesday, April 22nd.
New Requirement for Visa Interviews:All visa applicants in Abuja and Lagos must present a completed DS-160 visa application form that includes a confirmation or barcode number, which starts with “AA” followed by two zeroes (AA00). This number must correspond with the one used when scheduling your appointment online. Additionally, please ensure that your appointment is made in the location selected during the completion of your DS-160 form.
Correcting DS-160 Barcode: The mission has communicated that previously utilized DS-160 forms cannot be reapplied. Furthermore, if any discrepancies arise, the concerned applicant must submit a correction request within 10 days.
Matching Barcode Numbers: Please note that a DS-160 form from a previous application cannot be reused. If there is an error with the barcode on your DS-160 form, it is essential to log into your AVITS account at least 10 days prior to your appointment to create a support ticket for the correction of your barcode number. It is critical to ensure that the confirmation and barcode number on your DS-160 form matches the one used to schedule your appointment; otherwise, entry to the Consular Section and participation in the visa interview will not be permitted.
Double-Check Your Information: Nigerian applicants are kindly reminded to verify their alignment with the outlined procedures at least two weeks prior to their scheduled interviews. It is important that applicants schedule their appointments at the same Consular Post selected when completing the DS-160 form. We recommend confirming that the barcode number on your DS-160 accurately matches the one used for scheduling your appointment, ensuring a smooth interview process. Thank you for your attention to this important detail.
Rescheduling Appointments: If you are unable to attend your appointment due to a mismatch in your barcode numbers, please ensure the issue is rectified before scheduling a new appointment to continue with your visa application. You can schedule a new appointment by logging into your AVITS account. Additionally, if your visa fee has expired, please be aware that you may need to remit a new payment prior to booking your appointment.
Earlier this year, the mission also issued a directive requiring visa applicants to visit the consulate as part of the application process.
